Food and Beverage Companies Continue to Choose Kansas City

by KC SmartPort Intern | Aug 05, 2019

Niagara Bottling, LLC, a family owned manufacturer of bottled water and soft drinks, will open a new manufacturing facility at CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Kansas City, Mo. The company will create nearly 50 new jobs and invest $68 million in a 400,000-sq.-ft. operation.

This is the second food and beverage company that selected the Kansas City region in the last few months. Hostess Brands LLC recently announced the opening of a distribution facility in Edgerton, Kan. Both companies cited proximity to corporate offices and location aligning with strategic distribution as reasons for settling here.

In a recent Kansas City Business Journal article, KC SmartPort President Chris Gutierrez discussed the growth in food and beverage companies coming to the Kansas City region.

"I know there are a number of both manufacturing and distribution projects that we're working on to position in Kansas City," Gutierrez said. "The volume of these deals is going to continue, and we're going to do our best to win them all."

Kansas City has more than 200 food and beverage manufacturers, generating $9.4 billion and employing more than 16,000 people. Companies include Bimbo Bakeries, Boulevard Brewery, Frito-Lay, General Mills, Hiland Dairy Foods, Hillshire Brands, Hostess Brands, KC Sausage, Kerry Sweets, Lifeline Foods, Marlen International, Mars, QuikTrip, Reser's Fine Foods, Russell Stover Chocolates, Seaboard Triumph Foods, Smithfield Foods, Tyson Foods, Unilever and others.

Although the area has always been a prime location for food companies, rapid changes in the industry are sending more businesses Kansas City's way. Part of the attraction is the changes to food technology, as well as changing consumer demand.

From Kansas City, distribution centers and manufacturing plants can reach the majority of the continental U.S. population in one to two days, which will be a significant factor in the area's growth.
