Workforce Initiative Highlight | Northland CAPS

by Mary Rooney | Oct 01, 2019

The Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies (Northland CAPS) provides high school students in the northern suburbs of the Kansas City metro with a professional, innovative and entrepreneurial education through full immersion in high demand/high skill careers.

Northland CAPS students solve real world problems, using business standard software and equipment and are mentored by real employers. Students gain experience working with real businesses, assisting and learning through meaningful projects. Early career professional skills like project management, creativity, business ethics, teamwork and time management are instructed, role modeled and measured.

Learning at Northland CAPS is real-time, real-world and hands-on. Emphasis is placed on developing professional skills, such as communication and collaboration, which employers deem highly important to individual success.

Northland CAPS is open to students from the Missouri school districts of: Excelsior Springs, Kearney, Lathrop, Lawson, Liberty, North Kansas City, Park Hill, Platte County and Smithville. Students attending Northland Christian School, St. Pius X High School and homeschooled students are also eligible to participate.

Goals/Strategic Focus Areas:

  • Provide a relevant experience that supports college and career readiness for students.

  • Be an economic development driver for engagement in the Kansas City and Northland Region.

  • Be a leader in fundamental change for traditional teaching and learning.

  • Proactively and responsibly balance expansion of Northland CAPS through strand offerings and affordability for school districts.
